Clinical Neuropsychology

Clinical neuropsychology is a specialized field within psychology that examines the relationship between brain functioning, behavior, and cognitive abilities. Clinical neuropsychologists utilize objective, standardized measures to evaluate various domains of brain function, including memory, executive functioning, attention, motor skills, and perceptual abilities. Through comprehensive assessment protocols, these professionals analyze how different brain structures and systems influence behavior and cognitive performance.

A thorough neuropsychological evaluation typically incorporates psychological screening measures alongside cognitive testing to provide a complete understanding of an individual's neurocognitive functioning. This detailed assessment process yields a comprehensive profile of cognitive strengths and weaknesses, which serves multiple crucial purposes in healthcare delivery. The resulting data aids in differential diagnosis, treatment planning, and the development of targeted interventions. Furthermore, these assessments can track changes in cognitive functioning over time, evaluate treatment efficacy, and provide recommendations for accommodations or modifications across varying settings.

Common reasons for a Neuropsychological Assessment include:
Identify, define and characterize cognitive strengths, limitations, and intellectual skills. Establish a baseline level of cognitive functioning if an individual will be undergoing surgery, or to track cognitive changes over time. Assist with diagnosis and treatment planning including support for issues related to quality of life and daily functioning. Neuropsychological assessment can be helpful with diagnoses including Alzheimer's disease and other dementia syndromes, brain tumor, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease and other movement disorder, brain injury, post-concussion, stroke, and other neurodevelopmental/neurocognitive disorders.

Please note:
Insurance companies generally do not cover the costs associated with testing for learning disorders within a neuropsychological assessment, as these evaluations are typically considered educational in nature rather than medically necessary. While learning disorders can significantly impact daily functioning, most insurance providers consider the diagnosis and treatment of learning disorders to be primarily educational concerns that fall under the responsibility of the educational system rather than healthcare. This includes testing for specific learning disorders in reading, writing, and mathematics.
The assessment portions specifically targeting learning disorders (including academic achievement measures and specific cognitive testing batteries designed to diagnose learning disabilities) will need to be paid for out-of-pocket. If other medical or psychological conditions are being evaluated as part of the neuropsychological assessment, those portions may be covered by insurance, subject to your specific plan's benefits and requirements for medical necessity.

Insurance coverage for psychological testing within neuropsychological evaluations varies significantly by carrier and individual policy. While our office will provide specific CPT codes and units to be billed, it is the examinee's responsibility to verify coverage details with their insurance provider prior to testing. We cannot guarantee what portion of the evaluation will be covered by insurance, as this varies by carrier and individual policy benefits.

The examinee is responsible for:
- Verifying their insurance benefits
- Understanding their coverage limitations
- Confirming any pre-authorization requirements
- Being aware of out-of-pocket expenses
- Understanding their financial responsibility for non-covered services

While we will submit claims for covered services, the ultimate responsibility for understanding insurance coverage and any resulting financial obligations rests with the examinee. We encourage all examinees to contact their insurance provider directly to verify benefits and coverage specifics prior to beginning the evaluation process.

We cannot guarantee insurance reimbursement or coverage levels. Any services not covered by insurance will be the financial responsibility of the examinee.
